Marlon 132, Robert 129, Heston 131, Dennis 132; those weren’t the boys weight or bowling averages. In fact, the numbers represented the boys IQ’s at the last IQ test taken by them. They were all pretty smart. They were accurate except for Dennis’. The last IQ test Dennis took he received the 132 score. Dennis real IQ was between 170-175 He received that score at the end of last term when he took an IQ test where he pretended to be his brother Davey. Davey, two years younger than Dennis, was out sick when the IQ test was originally given. Davey had to take it two weeks later at a school out of his district where no one really knew him. Everyone who missed the original test would have to travel to this school to take the test. Dennis and Davey , being brothers, looked very much alike. Although Dennis was two years older, he and Davey were the same height and weight. Dennis had no problem entering the test room as Davey using Davey’s school ID to gain entrance. He scored a 172 on that test. The 132 score recorded for him was for the last IQ test he took in his own name; basically, he threw the IQ test. He purposely scored much lower than his actual IQ. He did this because he didn’t want the responsibility of a genius IQ but he wanted all of the advantages. Dennis knew if it was thought that he had a genius level IQ everyone would expect much more from him. The only thing Dennis wanted to have much more of was fun, according to his definition of fun. That usually meant fooling or tricking people, especially adults.
Davey, was a sophomore at Holy Cross High School (HCHS), two years behind Dennis. He was a good student and it never occurred to him that people would be expecting more from him. He enjoyed the attention the high IQ was giving him. He thought he may as well enjoy it because the attention would only last until the end of the term when he would have to take the IQ test and his real score would be recorded. Davey wasn’t worried because he had almost a year to come up with a solution. At 15 years old, Davey was incapable of thinking more than 2 hours into the future. In the meantime Davey was receiving all kinds of acclaim. 172 was the highest IQ ever received by a HCHS student and he was now a certified genius. People, both students and teachers, looked at his responses in a different light. Responses that were previously thought of as confusing or, even, stupid, were now looked at differently because they were coming from a certified genius. The girls now looked at him in a different manner. While brains were not considered sexy, genius was. He got overwhelmed by all of the attention he was receiving. Dennis told him to always be nice to people, never look down at anyone, and, as often as he could, say that he was blessed. This went over very big at a Catholic school. Eventually Davey had no problems handling whatever came before him. He had full confidence that Dennis would come up with a solution because he was also a genius. Dennis also swore that he would come up with a solution to the new IQ test Davey would be taking in the late spring. The boys’ father, Brian, was very suspicious. He thought, if anything, the IQ’s of his two sons should be reversed. He never told anyone what he was thinking.
